Over the years, the following have become regular features of our meetings:
· Word of the Week: we discuss the meaning and use of an unusual word and then try to use it in our writing.
· A presentation by a member of the group, once a month, which aims to share knowledge and experiences. Topics planned for the next few months include writing for children and how to self-publish on Amazon.
· Workshops, led by our chairperson Mary Berry, on various aspects of writing, for example exploring a particular form of poetry.
· Challenge of the week: Mary sets us a writing challenge to complete during the week, and we then read out and share our efforts with the group at the next meeting. Recent challenges have involved character development, and writing a newspaper article.
· Occasional guest speakers; typically local authors or writing experts.
· New for autumn 2021 is Grammar of the Week, where we aim to polish up our skills and perhaps try to remember what we were taught at school!
Importantly, the group supports members who wish to publish books. For example, we proof read for each other and run book launch events. The enforced Covid lockdown seems to have inspired several members to complete and publish projects, as follows:
· Our chairperson, Mary Berry has published a novel, “Maggie’s Book”: a book within a book which explores the lifelong love of Maggie and Peter.

· Our chairperson, Mary Berry has published a novel, “Maggie’s Book”: a book within a book which explores the lifelong love of Maggie and Peter.
· Phil Tomkins has added another to his collection of military novels, with the publication of “The Gun: A Trilogy of Man’s Inhumanity to Man”.
· Rudrani Kadiyala has published a book of short stories: “Troubled Waters- Stories of Love, Life and Strife.” She has also published a collection of poems “Words from the Heart”
All of these are available on Amazon, together with all the previous books written by Phil Tomkins, and John Blackledge’s books “What am I?” and “Anomalies”.We have also had competition success; Mary Berry and Alison Ormrod were two of the four winners of Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre’s LocalTale, and Sarah Garratt was a runner up in the NAWG national annual members’ competition with her short play “2050”.

Another of our members, Christine Stuart, explains what Tyldesley Creative Writers delivers for her.
“I wasn't sure at first, what being in a writing group would mean to me. So, I did what I normally do in a new situation: I listen, observe, and see what works that may well confirm what I already know. But practice makes perfect. I learned how to develop the style or styles I feel more comfortable with, in a relaxed environment, with everyone listening to each other. But the most satisfying effect it had on me was having an audience, without which I would have written a lot less.”
Covid undoubtedly gave us challenges, but we stayed together by email, telephone and Zoom, completing challenges and using the time to focus on our writing. We believe we have come back stronger than ever as we continue to “Write from the heart”.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please email our chairperson, Mary Berry, at [email protected]

Congratulations to Peter Greenwood, the winner of the first of our Auditor’s Challenge Competition. Congratulations also to the ‘very close’ runner up, Christine Stuart. The competition was a 1500 word short, ‘Science Fiction’ story with the title “2072”. Peter won a cash prize and holds our coveted ‘Oscar’ trophy. Christine was presented with the prize of a box of chocolates. Keith Garratt, who judged the competition entries, stated that he was very impressed with the standard of work presented by all who entered the competition

Tyldesley Creative Writers – Group Seasonal Competition

TCW held their quarterly seasonal competition towards the end of 2017. The project title was ‘MY FAVOURITE FILM OR TV PROGRAMME (past or present)’
Ian Hunter won the competition and wrote about his long-time favourite ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’. Ian gave us a nostalgic look back at this great film which also included a peep into his childhood memories of our local and now, long gone picture houses. Mary gave a homely picture of watching the annual TV run of ‘Wizard of Oz’ and came second.
Susan and Catherine also won – 1st and 2nd respectively in category B for the same project. Their favourites turned out to be ‘Coronation Street’ and the movie ‘Grease’. Both of these were very popular with our independent judge and all entries received very kind constructive messages which were returned with their entries.
You can see our OSCAR being proudly shown by Ian together with our other winners.
The awards were presented at our 5th December meeting at Tyldesley Library. This turned out to be a very busy meeting with Christmas Jumpers, hot coffee and topped with a Christmas Dinner at the Gatehouse Pub.
We look forward to a new year with new competitions, new challenges and hopefully a new venture into scriptwriting for some of us.
