Lilford Park Centenary Celebrations
In June 2015, Tyldesley Creative Writers enjoyed partaking in the Lilford Park Centenary celebrations by having a stall in Lilford Park over a period of two days, Saturday and Sunday. The whole event was a great success.
Our Group Member, Earle Law took charge and below is his report:
'Whilst at Lilford Park, we held a small poetry competition to hopefully, encourage 'would be' poets to try their luck while we informed them of the aims, values and achievements of Tyldesley Creative Writers. It was surprising how many casual visitors to our 'stand' were active poets and hopefully one or two of our contacts will come along to one of our group meetings sometime in the future.
The competition was free to enter and on the Saturday a young schoolgirl, Shannon (Roberts) with a poem called 'The Fair' was successful -
The Fair
When I walk in the park with hope in my mind
I look on the stalls for what I can find...
Boys and girls having fun
and buying tickets to see if they've won...
There is lots to do and many things to see
I hope to win a big Teddy to take home with me!
It's time for a drink and a chill in the sun
then I check all my tickets to see if I've won...
In addition, an 'experienced' young man with a love for poetry, Neil H. Scott, submitted his poem entitled 'Love Birds'
Love Birds
Whilst standing by his window a nightingale flew by
oblivious to his memoirs brought a teardrop to his eye...
His latest lack of contact with his true love years gone by...
He hard the love bird's mating call and subsequent reply.
His mind began to wonder reminiscent of his past
the nightingale then found it's mate - together they would last...
From this he learned so gracefully he had something to prove
these birds of love had taught - he needs to make his move...
On the Sunday, a joint effort by 'The Turnpike Community Theatre' was adjudged to be the winner with their entry. ('Hidden Thoughts' could be a title as they forgot to write one down):
Hidden Thoughts
The twigs snapped beneath her feet
The grass covered the ground - like a velvet sheet
The sky above looked moody and grey
As she ran to the forest feeling full of dismay
Although she looked happy, she was quarrelling inside
no-one knew what she had to hide.
Where should she go? What should she do?
Her world had collapsed and she hadn't a clue.
All three enties received a Morrisons gift voucher and we wish to thank everyone for their participation.
Thanks to Julie McKiernan, Lee McStein and his 'runners' as he called his helpers, for all the help they gave us.'

Poem of the Month July
A poem by Earle Law
Someone Special
Someone who is special and must be very nice
Will win a lovely date with me when I have cast three dice...
I've been invited to a party - that's at my boss's house
The invites are for couples but I haven't got a spouse...
I do like three nice ladies, but I'll have to choose just one
I know they all would love to go but it's either one or none!
First, there is sweet Janet, I've known her all my life
She's always been in love with me and wants to be my wife...
So tall and slim is Rachel, but also rough and ready
She likes to get me into bed to cuddle like her Teddy...
The final one is gorgeous, her name is Sheila Brown
So many folk admire her looks, she's loved all over town...
The time has come to cast the dice but Janet scores just four
Then Rachel's dice flies very high but only scores one more!
A six could give me a date with Sheila, so I threw my very best
It bounced off windows, doors and chairs before it came to rest...
My phone rang out as I looked down and my heart just jumped with glee
For on that dice, to my surprise, a six stared back at me
My boss, it was, upon the phone, he'd changed his party plans,
I had to drive a mini-bus and be his 'pick-up man'...
Collect my new fiancée as you travel into town
I think you'll find her really nice, her name is Shiela Brown.
Then when you've picked up Sheila, continue down the hill
Where two young ladies wait for you, Janet and Rachel
With these you must be tactful and careful what you say
The ladies are now lesbians but no-one knows they're gay...
My plans are now in ruins so there's one thing left to do
I'll gather up those three damned dice and stick them down the loo!

Poem of the month June
Last night as I lay sleeping
I died or so it seemed.
Then I went to heaven
But only in my dream
Up there St Peter met me
Standing at the pearly gate
He said I must check your record
Please stand here and wait
He turned and said; your record
is covered with terrible flaws,
On earth I see you rallied For every loosing cause
I see that you drank alcohol
And smoked and used drugs too
Fact is you've done everything
A good person should never do
We can't have people like you up here
Your life was full of sin
Then he read the last of my record
Took my hand and said come in
He led me up to the big boss and said
Take him in and treat him well
He used to work for the NHS
He's done his time in Hell!

FAVOURITE ELTON JOHN SONG
It’s hard to pick a favourite
Of songs by Elton John.
He wrote so many first class hits,
How can I pick just one?
I like A Town Called Jubilee
But also Runaway Train,
And I’m Still Standing’s really good,
I’ll have to rack my brain.
Rocket Man and Hercules,
I can’t tell them apart,
But I must say I’d love to win’
So Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.
I think that Candle in the Wind
Must be my favourite song,
It’s poignant message gets to you
Of a life that went so wrong.
I’ve looked through Elton’s list of songs
And most of them I’ve heard.
I hope if I don’t win you’ll say
Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word.
